| Researches |
A striking feature
of our programmes
is our gender research
projects. The research
that we carry out
leads to publications
in all three languages.
This material is used
for lobbying and advocacy
with the state and
non-state actors as
well as providing
valuable information
to all. |

WERC has developed a research process through
the following steps |
| |
|
|
- The Area of research is identified
at the staff meetings and discussed
at the Board level. Emphasis is
given to challenging issues in the
contemporary situation.
- Research topic is approved and
carried out, both by the staff at
WERC as well as others who are professionally
equipped.
- Research findings and recommendations
are aimed at creating social awareness,

History of Women's Movement in Sri Lanka -
Dr. Selvy Thiruchandran
This is an attempt to place on record a comprehensive history of different women’s movements in rural, urban, and plantation social settings and the women’s action programmes of militant groups in the Northern, Eastern and Southern regions.
The histories of many women’s movements have not even been recorded within the mainstream historiography in Sri Lanka. It seems that many of the women’s interventions for social equality are not even identified ‘political’ as such. Often they are treated as more cultural and ‘apolitical’ phenomena. But, in Sri Lanka, there is no paucity of women’s movements and their social interventions even in the rural social contexts. Women’s active participation in militant politics also is not a novel experience. There is no doubt that these women’s struggles are more obstructed by power structures and the ideology of traditional society, which are more central in patriarchal hegemony. This research intends to explore these mostly forgotten aspects of different women’s movements and it argues that documenting the success stories and failures of these movements should be an essential part in the reading nationalist patriarchal hegemony from a subaltern standpoint.

UNDERSTANDING
CEDAW
– An
easy to read,
booklet.
It has been
realized that
although Sri
Lanka ratified
this convention
in 1981, this
document failed
to have an
impact on
the women
of this country.
WERC therefore
initiated
a project
to produce
a simplified
version of
this important
document in
the form of
an easy-to-read,
handy booklet
to facilitate
the comprehension
of its contents.
Sixteen articles
of the convention
that enumerate
the 'rights'
of women are
now presented
in a simple,
reader-friendly
manner and
are accompanied
by delightful
meaningful
illustrations.
This is being
widely-distributed
among all
sections of
the society.
This Booklet
was distributed
at the University
of Colombo
among the
students reading
for Masters
in Human Rights
programme.

NIVEDINI
– Journal
on Gender
Studies –
in the three
national languages
An annual
journal produced
by WERC contained
many articles
relating to
women’s
rights. This
journal is
being published
in three languages.
Nivedini makes
a conscious
choice to
be interdisciplinary
and also not
to have specific
or particular
themes for
its issues.
This times
issue is concentrating
on how Feminists
are linking
their struggle
to all issues,
to all theories
and to all
developments.
The interdisciplinarity
of gender/women’s
studies is
the logical
outcome of
this process.
The holistic
knowledge-generating
epoch coincides
with the rise
of the new
feminist scholarship,
which is susceptible
to a whole
range of intellectual
influences.
