The uncertain political situation
has made long-term planning and
project design and implementation
an arduous and complex task. WERC,
as always is valiantly pushing
itself forward, not in the least
discouraged by the formidable
obstacles in the form of dwindling
funds and political uncertainty.
We are grateful for your support.
Suggestion: to make this more
personal perhaps sign it by someone
official. |

| VOLUNTEER
& JOB OPPORTUNITIES |

-
Volunteer Opportunites |
|
| Volunteers
are important within our organisation and
we are lucky enough to have volunteers from
Sri Lanka and from all around the world. There
are many short-term and long-term opportunities
available, as well as work experience placements. |

of the Volunteers |
Lisa
Rose – Anne Overton, 22 year old,
student (UK) August 05- January 06
“I came to Sri Lanka with Volunteer
International who arranged everything from
the internship at WERC to my accommodation
and visas. I am on a research internship
and also doing my dissertation. I help with
editing and am partly responsible for the
set-up, material and maintenance of the
website. There are so many progressive possibilities
for women, what is a shame are the limitations
women face, such as funding and patriarchal
systems of power. Things are changing though
and I am glad to be a part of it.”
M.Tharani, (Sri
Lanka) June 05 - present
“I volunteered at WERC to get some
work experiences and I am glad I made this
choice. I am working in the library as a
Library Assistant helping the library staff
in sorting out books and record the misplaced
books. I did not know much about NGO’s
and the social services they are involved
in. After coming to WERC, I realised the
impact such committed organisations make
to the society.”
Zarah Henschen,
20 years old, student (Germany) August 04
– August 05
“I have learnt so much in these months
of engaging myself in this organisation.
I gained a lot of knowledge regarding the
framework in which an NGO operates and the
difficulties they face in programme/project
organising. The experience of conducting
a programme successfully was very satisfying
to me. My daily work, discussion with the
staff and research in newspapers and documents
from the resource centre provided me with
a detailed insight to social problems in
Sri Lanka. I enjoyed the discussion with
the staff members about cultural differences
and experiences in the Sri Lankan/Asian
society and the German/ European society
in which both sides learn a lot from each
other.
The Tsunami catastrophe in December 2004
was a difficult time for me, but I have
managed to come over this traumatic experience
and it gave me an insight into international
development politics and the problems in
the relief and reconstruction process.
I hope that I can transfer a lot of the
knowledge, insights and new points of view
to Germany and also act according to them.
The daily struggle NGO’s have to face
in their work towards a better society is
something, which I think is worthy of support.
WERC really impressed me with its well-organised
structure and the kindness among the staff.”

Work Experience |
|
This is
a local initiative to encourage women into the workplace
and to get valuable work experience for the future.
There are many areas to get involved in as well
as learn how an NGO operates coupled with a gender
sensitive environment.
- Placements
There are two ways to volunteer for WERC if you
are not from Sri Lanka. You can go through Volunteer
International, an independent organization who will
facilitate your experience and arrange all accommodation,
visas, airport pick-up, and breakfast/dinner etc
for a set fee.
Or you can come independently and everything will
be down to you. Of course, we will help to find
suitable temporary lodgings for the first part of
your stay and help you look for something else if
you so wish for something more permanent.
- Editorial Assitants
(short and long term):
This position includes proof-reading, editing and
typing publications in English. The documents will
include research papers, journals, the biannual
progress report etc. There are also opportunities
to handle/be involved with a project and research.
- WERC Volunteership
(long term):
This is a unique opportunity to become involved
in all aspects of the organisation. Training in
library skills, involvement in office, research,
projects, workshops, teaching English etc are all
part of this position and can be tailored to suit
the individual. |
